Township Update

Every year all the Townships in Illinois hold their annual meetings on the same night. This night was Tuesday April 10.

Given my obsession with the concept of balanced government, you can only imagine my chagrin upon learning that certain Leftist groups were going to attempt to take control of the meeting (my Township, and all of the Townships in DuPage County, for that matter) and force a referendum onto the next ballot asking in a very long way this simple question: should the US begin an immediate withdrawal of its forces from Iraq? Actually, given my obsession with the concept of balanced government (and the respectful balancing of powers among the respective spheres) as you can imagine, learning this nearly sent me into shock.

Fortunately, the Township GOP had enough people there to make sure the meeting wasn't railroaded into utter stupidity. They made their motion; it was seconded and went up for a vote. The nays carried the day.

While I have very large, very difficult-to-surmount issues with the Republican party, it is important that we remember that they're not actively rooting for the defeat, humiliation and/or destruction of the United States. It remains our job to make the party better, or start over. Until that day, we've got to support the only sane option out there.

I'm thinking not. I was listening to an interview with Alan Keyes a few days back and something he said really lined up with my beliefs. It was "Evil may prevail, but not with my help". The way I see it, I am responsible for my vote. Responsible to God, my family, my community and myself. I plan to vote for the best candidate, not the most electable.

You may argue that I could be throwing my vote away, but I will have a clean conscience. Maybe the GOP should start thinking about that instead of how much money a candidate can raise.

Mom,

I think possibly you've got me wrong. Let me try and clarify what I was getting at.

I'm with you 100%, and I vote the same way... in the primaries. But - God help us - if it comes down to Hillary and Rudy, I'll hold my nose and vote for Rudy.

I appreciate the clarification, but, I don't have you wrong. I'll write someone in rather than vote against my conscience. It's past time for the rest of America to step up to the plate in this manner as well.
It may seem stupid, but I believe that I have to do what's right and let God take care of the rest.

Mom,

It doesn't seem stupid; it seems (is) principled.

It is an idea worthy of it's own exploration, though. If you're so inclined and time permits you to write a bit about it, especially the consequences of voting that way, I'd respectfully ask if you would grace us with a guest blog?

I thank you for the invitation and I will think on it. It's a mighty busy time of year here in our household, so it may take a while.

Well, Mom, I know how that can be, so don't take on anything that'll cause hardship in your home. Things get busy in each of our lives, and we've got to ride out those spikes when they happen...
